Installation and removal
Automatic installation
Automatic installation is the preferred way to install a plugin.
To begin installation process open Plugins page from the main menu. This page contains the list of the currently installed Wordpress plugins and lets you install, update or delete your plugins.
Click Add New to go to the "Add Plugins" window for adding a new plugin:

Click Upload Plugin:

Click Choose File to open the file selection dialog:

Choose the file to upload. The correct file for uploading is "gallery-factory.zip", located in the package file which you've downloaded from CodeCanyon ("All files & documentation" menu item in the download menu). Alternatively, you can download the installable WordPress file from CodeCanyon and use it for installation ("Installable Wordpress file only" menu item). The file selection dialog may look differently depending on your operating system.

Now everything is ready for the installation. Click Install now:

At this step, Wordpress may prompt for your FTP credentials. This may happen if your hosting server is not configured to grant WordPress the direct access to the plugin installation directory. Provide correct values and click Proceed. If Wordpress has direct access to {WP root}/wp-content/plugins folder on the server or you've entered FTP credentials before, this step will be omitted and you will be directed to the next screen.

In case you don't know the FTP credentials, please contact your server administrator for further assistance.
After successful uploading and installation, the plugin needs to be activated to become fully functional. Click Activate Plugin:

You will see activated Gallery Factory plugin in your plugins list and Gallery Factory menu item in the main menu.

Gallery Factory is installed and ready to go!
Manual installation
Manual installation is used when automatic installation is not available due to the server setup or when you are more comfortable with direct uploading files to the server.
Unpack the archive which you have downloaded from CodeCanyon. Inside the archive you will find the gallery-factory folder.
Copy this folder and all its contents to your wordpress plugins folder (normally located at {WP root}/wp-content/plugins/).
Open Plugins page from the main menu. Locate Gallery Factory plugin in the list and click Activate:

You will see activated Gallery Factory plugin in your plugins list and Gallery Factory menu item in the main menu.

Gallery Factory is installed and ready to go!
Deactivating and removing
Open Plugins page from the main menu, locate Gallery Factory plugin and click Deactivate.

Now the plugin is deactivated, the "Gallery Factory" is not available in the admin menu and all plugin functions are disabled. To completely remove plugin and all its files click Delete

Note: deactivating or deleting the plugin doesn't delete your Gallery Factory-related data (folders, albums, uploaded images, setup data etc).
Updating the plugin
The update process is simple: first, deactivate and delete the currently installed plugin version, then install the new one, as it was described in the previous sections.
Deleting the old plugin version doesn't affect your uploaded images and other plugin-related data, as it removes only the plugin system files. On activating, the new version will update the database if needed.
Please read the release notice (if provided with the plugin package) for any additional information regarding the update process.
Note: it's highly recommended to make a backup copy of your WordPress installation before updating the plugin.
Quick start
This section will lead you through the basic plugin functions. After completing the proposed steps you'll be ready to create with Gallery Factory, but for more in-depth acquaintance with Gallery Factory plugin please refer to the rest of the current document.
Opening Gallery Factory Manager
The control center of the plugin is Gallery Manager page. Gallery Manager provides the overview of your folders, albums and images, as well as lets you manage your image collection and create layouts.
Open Gallery Manager by clicking on Gallery Factory menu item in the main menu:

You will see the Gallery Factory Manager interface:

When you enter Gallery Factory Manager for the first time the interactive quick tutorial will show up. That tutorial will familiarize you with the plugin's user interface elements and introduce you the essential features.
Creating a new folder
The plugin features multi-level folder structure for keeping your albums organized. So, before creating your first album let's create a parent folder for it.
While in Gallery Factory Manager, hover the + button in the bottom-right corner of the screen to reveal available actions:

Click the Add new folder button:

Enter the name for the new folder and click Create:

The new folder is created on the server immediately, and you can see it in the Navigation panel and in the Main panel:

Adding a new album to the folder
Let's add a new album to the folder you've just created. First navigate to the folder. To do so, click on this folder in the Navigation panel or double-click it in the Main panel:

The current folder's name is displayed in the main Panel's header and the Main panel now displays the content of the folder (yet empty). Hover the + button to reveal actions:

Click the Add new album button:

Enter the desired album name and click Create:

You'll see the created folder displayed in the folder contents (Main panel). Also this album is now a part of your library tree (you can click the folder icon in the Navigation panel to expand the folder).

Uploading images
Now it's time to upload some images to the new album. Navigate to the album the same way you've navigated to the folder before. The Main panel now shows the content of the album.

There are two ways to upload images. You can just drag image files to the Gallery Factory window. Alternatively you can use the + button in the bottom-right corner, which transforms to the upload button on hover:

Select images to upload in the appeared dialog and confirm your selection. After the upload is complete, the album content will be updated to display new items.

Setting up the album layout
Album's attributes, settings and layout can be accessed through the Album Editor. To open Album editor press Edit album button in the main toolbar:

Album Editor is divided into several tabs, and opens with "General" tab activated. You can enter album's caption & description here. Now switch to the "Layout tab".

Here you can choose layout type, edit layout options, drag and resize (in Metro layout type) thumbnails to achieve the desired layout look. For more info on the layout editor please refer to the Album Editor > Layout tab section.

You can reorder thumbnails by dragging them to the desired position.

In Metro layout you can also change the size of the thumbnail by dragging image's edges.

There are two more tabs here: Style and Settings. We can skip them now and use the default settings. These tabs are explained in details in further sections of the current documentation.
To save the changes you've made to the gallery layout click the Save changes button.

Note: Your edits are applied only on save. If you quit the editor without saving changes, they will be discarded.
Publishing your album
After you set the layout for the new album, it's ready to be displayed in one of your pages or posts.
Open or create post/page, to which you want to add your album, insert a Gallery Factory shortcode to
the content of the post/page by clicking Insert Gallery Factory Album
button:
Select the album to be inserted:

To apply your changes to the post/page click Publish (if you've created a new post/page) or Update (if you are editing the existing item). Now you can navigate to the post/page and see your first Gallery Factory album displayed.
Congratulations, you've mastered the basic Gallery Factory features. For the further details please refer to the following sections of this manual.
Settings
It is recommended to review and update (if needed) the general plugin settings before you start using the plugin.
Plugin's Settings page can be accessed by clicking Gallery Factory > Settings item of your admin panel main menu.

General settings
Setting page displays the available global settings:

Global settings affect behavior and appearance of all albums, and some of them can be overridden by a dedicated setting for a folder or album.
The following settings are available:
Lightbox
This setting defines the behavior on user's click on a gallery thumbnail. Normally a user would expect opening of the full version of the clicked image in a popup layer. These popup image presenters are called lightboxes. Gallery Factory provides three built-in lightboxes, and you can choose the one to be used with Gallery Factory albums or completely disable built-in lightbox. There are 5 options available:
- Disabled. This option disables lightbox integration for the albums. Use this option to avoid compatibility problems in case the lightbox behavior is already attached by other plugin or your theme.
- Imagelightbox. This is the default and the preferred lightbox for the plugin. For more info on this lightbox refer to http://osvaldas.info/image-lightbox-responsive-touch-friendly
- Colorbox. For more info on this lightbox refer to http://www.jacklmoore.com/colorbox/
- Lightbox2. For more info on this lightbox refer to http://lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/
- iLightbox. This option enables integration with iLightbox. You need this plugin installed for this option to take effect.
- Nivo lightbox. This option enables integration with Nivo lightbox. You need this plugin installed for this option to take effect.
Gallery item style
This setting defines the default gallery item layout style (the appearance and hover effects of an image thumbnail in a gallery), which should be set for new folders and albums. This doesn't affect already created folders and albums.
Pagination style
This option allows you to choose from two built-in styles for displaying the pagination controls, or to use your own style for it:
- Light. Activates the built-in style, optimized for light themes.
- Dark. Activates the built-in style, optimized for dark themes.
- Custom. Sets the "vls-gf-style-custom" class for the gallery element, allowing you to define your own CSS for styling the pagination controls.
Use lazy loading
Lazy loading of image thumbnails means that thumbnails outside the viewport are not loaded on the initial page load, but start loading only when a user scrolls to them. Enabling this feature speeds up the initial page load and can reduce bandwidth usage for large albums. It is recommended to enable lazy loading unless you have a reason to turn it off.
Thumbnail maximum resolution (width×height)
This setting affects the maximum resolution of image thumbnails (the downsized copies of the original images, that are used for presenting images in the album layout on a page). Depending on your website's design and layout settings, the optimal thumbnail size can vary.
Thumbnail quality
This setting affects the JPEG compression ratio of generated downsized images. Lower values result in smaller image files, but with some visual quality loss. On the other side, setting a larger value will give larger but better-looking images. Usually the reasonable value lies between 40 and 70.
Note: Changing thumbnail resolution and quality doesn't affect already generated images. To apply the new settings to the previously uploaded images run the "Regenerate thumbnails" procedure
Layout defaults
The second tab of the settings page is "Layout defaults":

On this tab you can set the default layout settings, which will be applied to all new folders and albums. Changing these settings doesn't affect already existing folders and albums.
The following settings are available:
Layout type
You can choose between three layout types:
- Grid
- Metro
- Masonry
Column count
Defines the column count, the available values are from 1 to 16.
Column count (mobile)
Defines the column count for mobile displays, the available values are from 1 to 16.
Aspect ratio
This setting affects only Grid and Metro layouts. It sets the width to height ratio for displayed image thumbnails.
Horizontal spacing
Sets the horizontal space between thumbnails in a layout.
Vertical spacing
Sets the vertical space between thumbnails in a layout.
Pagination type
Enables the pagination of a layout and defines its type. You can choose from the following options:
- None. Pagination is disabled.
- Paged(numbers). One page at a time is displayed, pagination controls are rendered as numbered buttons.
- Paged (bullets). One page at a time is displayed, pagination controls are rendered as bullets.
- Load more. The subsequent page is appended to already displayed ones when a visitor clicks the "Load more" button.
- Load on scroll. The subsequent page is appended to already displayed ones on scrolling down the page.
Page size in rows
This setting is available if the "Pagination type" is set to anything but "None". For the Grid and Metro layouts it defines the exact page size in rows, and the Masonry layout uses this value as the target, but actual image count in each column may slightly vary depending on individual images.
After setting options click Save Changes button in the top-left corner to apply changed settings.
Tools
Gallery Factory provides a set of maintenance & import tools. To access them open Gallery Factory > Tools item in main WP menu panel:

Tools page has three tabs, providing access to the available actions:
Thumbnail regeneration

Thumbnail regeneration recreates the downsized copies of the original images, using the current thumbnail size settings. So this action must be performed each time when you change the thumbnail size or quality settings.
To start the thumbnail regeneration process click Regenerate thumbnails.
Once the process is started, you will see the progress indicator. Do not leave the tab until it's finished.
Import from WP Media

To start importing click Import images from WP Media.
Once started, the process can not be canceled or reverted. While the import is in progress, please do not leave or reload the page - once it's finished, the page will display a notice about import success.
Yuu can import images more than once, but each time it will copy all WP Media images to the Gallery Factory collection, possibly duplicating already imported images.
Imported images can be found under the "Unsorted images" folder in Gallery Manager.
Import from NextGen Gallery

To start the import process click Import images from NextGen Gallery
Once started, the process can not be canceled or reverted. While it's in progress, please do not leave or reload the page. Once it's finished, you'll see a success message.
You can perform the import more than once, but each time it will copy all NextGen data to the Gallery Factory collection, and possibly duplicating already imported folders, albums and images.
The import process translates NextGen collection structure to the Gallery Factory structure (albums to folders, galleries to albums). By default all the imported folders will be added to Gallery Factory library as top-level folders, but if you want all imported data to go to the dedicated folder, check Create "NextGen" folder and put all imported items there option before starting the import.

To open file selection dialog click Upload images button:

In the appeared dialog select files to upload and confirm your selection.
Alternatively, just drag image files into the window and drop them:

The upload process starts immediately, you can track the progress in the message box shown in the bottom-right corner. When the upload is complete, close the message box by clicking Close (or, it will close automatically after a while).

Arranging folders & albums
Sorting albums and folders and moving them between folders are performed by simply dragging an item to the desired position in the list.
Start drag a folder or an album that you want to move. You will see the helper, showing the placement of the currently dragged item. When you are satisfied with the new item position, release the mouse button and the item will be placed there. The new item position is saved on the server immediately after the drop, so you don't have to save it manually.

Folders can contain both folders and albums, but albums can not have any child items (only images).
Dragged folder's subtree structure is preserved during while being moved - all child folders and albums are be moved with their parent.
Folder overview
The Folder overview is displayed in the Main panel when a folder is activated. It shows the content of the current folder and provides access to the folder management functions.
Editing folder
To open the current folder's editor click Edit folder in the main toolbar.

Also, you can edit the name, caption and description right in the list: click on the text to edit, when ready click outside the edited cell or press enter. The changes are immediately saved in the database.
Deleting folder
To delete the current folder click Delete folder:

Confirm deleting by clicking Delete

Note: Deleting a folder which contains other items means that all contained items (folders and albums) will also be deleted. But images which are added to the albums being deleted are not deleted from the Gallery Factory collection. They can be still found in the "All images" predefined folder, remain added to some other albums or be found in the "Unsorted images" predefined folder.
Viewing folder and album info summary
Click on an item in the main panel to show this item's summary in the Info panel.
Album overview
Album overview is displayed in the Main panel when an album is activated. It shows the content of the current album and provides access to the album management functions.
Editing album
To open the current albums' editor click Edit folder in the main toolbar.

Also, you can edit images' name, caption and description right in the list: click on the text to edit, when ready click outside the edited cell or press enter. The changes are immediately saved in the database.
Deleting album
To delete the current album click Delete album:

Confirm deleting by clicking Delete

Note: The album's images are not deleted with the album itself. They can be still found in the "All images" predefined folder, remain added to some other albums or be found in the "Unsorted images" predefined folder.
Selecting and deleting images
To enable multiple image selection you need to activate the bulk select mode. Click Bulk select:

This will activate the selection toolbar:

The buttons on the selection toolbar are:
- Cancel selection: resets the selection and exits the bulk select mode;
- Select all: selects all images;
- Select inverted: inverts the selection;
- Deselect all: resets the selection;
- Delete selected: deletes selected images (see the note on deleting images below);
Note: If you delete images from an album, they are just removed from that album and not deleted from the library. When you delete image from "All images" or "Unsorted images", they are completely deleted from the library.
While in the bulk select mode, you can click thumbnails to select/deselect them, use select mode buttons to select all thumbnails, deselect all thumbnails or invert current selection. You can also select/deselect a range of images, clicking on the first image in the range, then clicking on the last image in the range while holding the keyboard Shift key. All images in the range will be selected/deselected according to the state of the last clicked image.
Moving images between albums
Images can be moved between albums by dragging them from the Main panel to the album or All images or Unsorted images folders in the Navigation panel

You can also move multiple images using bulk select mode (select multiple images and start dragging any of them - the cursor will change its appearance to the dragging helper, showing the number of the images being dragged):

Please note the following logic:
- If you drag an image from one album to another, it will be moved from the source album to the target album (removed from the former and added to the latter).
- If you drag an image from any album to All images or Unsorted images predefined folders, it will be removed from the source album (thus it's equivalent to deleting images from an album).
- If you drag an image from All images or Unsorted images to an album, it will be added to the target album and removed from the Unsorted images predefined folder.
Note: Image move actions are saved to the database immediately on image drop.
Switching the image list view mode
You can switch the list mode from the thumbnail view to the table view and back:

The table view displays album's images as a table, showing their attributes:

You can change the sorting order by clicking column headers. The first click sorts that column in the ascending order, the second click reverses the order.
Viewing image info summary
Click on an item in the main panel to show this item's summary info in the Info panel.

To open the Editor navigate to the folder or album you want to edit and click the Edit button:

To save your changes click Save changes:

To return to Gallery Manager click the Return button:

Album Editor has tree tabs: general, layout, settings.
General tab
The General tab contains the main attributes:

The following attributes are available on this tab:
- Name: the name of the album as it is displayed in the Albums Panel;
- Slug: album's name as it should appear in the URL (see Posting folders section);
- Caption: the album's caption;
- Description: the album's description.
- Shortcode: the read-only field showing the shortcode for inserting the current folder or album to posts and pages. Note that folders can also be displayed using the [vls_gf_album] shortcode, in this case a gallery of it's child items' cover images will be displayed;
- Tags: tags of the current album. Start typing in the field to see suggested existing tags, press Enter to insert the currently selected tag. You can also type "?" to display all available tags in the suggestion popup.
Click on the image on the right side to set or change album's cover image. The image selection dialog displays all the images in the current album. Click on any image to select it or Cancel to close the dialog without making changes:

Layout tab
The Layout tab lets you edit the layout for an album (the way this album should be presented on a front-end page). It's divided into two panels: the main panel where you see the actual layout and can edit it by dragging and resizing thumbnails, and the side panel with the layout settings:

New layout settings are immediately applied to the layout in the main panel, so you can see the resulting layout as you make changes. There are following settings:
- Layout type: sets the layout type. Available options are Grid, Metro and Masonry.
- Column count: sets the column count for the layout. You can choose values from 1 to 16. For the Metro layout this option sets the base grid column count, and you can build your own layout on top of this grid.
- Column count (mobile): sets the column count for the layout displayed on mobile screens. You can choose values from 1 to 16.
- Aspect ratio: sets the aspect ratio for thumbnails, expressed in thumbnail's width-to-height ratio. This option can be entered as, for example, "1.33", "4/3", "4:3" or "4-3".
- Horizontal spacing: sets the horizontal spacing between thumbnails in pixels. Non-negative integer values are allowed.
- Vertical spacing: sets the vertical spacing between thumbnails in pixels. Non-negative integer values are allowed.
- Align bottom row: available for Masonry layout type only; check this option if you want the layout columns to be adjusted to the same height.
-
Pagination type: sets one of the available layout pagination types:
- None. Turns off the pagination.
- Paged (numbers). The album is split into pages, the page navigation is presented as numbered buttons, with "previous image" and "next image" buttons.
- Paged (bullets). The album is split into pages, the page navigation is presented as bullets.
- Load more button. The subsequent pages are loaded and seamlessly appended to the end of the gallery when a user clicks "Load more" button.
- Load on scroll. The album's behavior is similar to the "Load more button" variant, but instead of a button click a new page loads when the a user scrolls down to the bottom of the gallery.
- Page size in rows: this option is available if pagination type other than "None" is selected; sets the page size.
You can reorder thumbnails by dragging them to the desired position, while the other thumbnails will be repositioned accordingly:

"Metro" layout type allows you to change the size of thumbnails, so they can span more than one cell of the base grid. To change the size of a thumbnail drag one of the thumbnail's edges:

Click on a thumbnail to open the "Thumbnail Crop" dialog:

Here you can drag the edges of the cropping region to set the particular part of the original image to be used as a thumbnail. Click Save to apply your changes and return to the layout.
To have a better view of your layout you can zoom it in and out using the zoom buttons:

Zoom doesn't affect the resulting album's layout on a page.
Style
The Style tab is the place where you can customize the appearance of your album, namely hover effects for album's image thumbnails. The tab consists of two panels: the main panel where you can see the currently set style and try hover effects, and the side panel where you can change style settings:
Start with selecting the "Gallery item style" from the style library. Each style has its own set of available settings, which are displayed in the side panel upon style selection.
You can customize each available parameter or revert back to the default value by clicking the × button located next to it.
Settings tab
The Settings tab contains album settings, which allow you to override global settings (see Settings section) for a particular album:

Here you can find the following settings:
Append new images to
This setting defines the position where new images (uploaded or moved to the album) should be placed in the album's layout.
- Bottom. This is the default behavior, new images are appended to the bottom of the layout. This option is recommended for use with the Metro layout, because new images, added to the bottom, won't affect the position of the previously placed images.
- Top. The new images are added to the top of the layout, the last added image being the first in the layout. Please note, that appending new images to the top of a layout can cause unwanted repositioning of previously placed images.
Pagination style
This option allows you to choose from two built-in styles for displaying the pagination controls, or to use your own style for it:
- Use global setting. Select this option to use global Gallery Factory setting.
- Light. Activates the built-in style, optimized for light themes.
- Dark. Activates the built-in style, optimized for dark themes.
- Custom. Sets the "vls-gf-style-custom" class for the gallery element, allowing you to define your own CSS for styling the pagination controls.
Image editor
In Image Editor you can view and modify image properties
To open an image in Image Editor double-click an image item in the main panel (a thumbnail or a table line, depending on the current view mode) or click an image once to show its summary in the Info panel and click the Edit image under the image preview:

You can navigate to the other images in the list without returning to the Manager screen using the arrow buttons:

To save changes click Save image:

The Return button brings you back to the Manager:

The Image Editor consists of four tabs: general, metadata, preview, settings.
General
The General tab contains main image attributes:

- Name: the name of the image, used to display in in the admin interface;
- Caption: image caption, used for the front-end display;
- Description: image description;
- Alt text: alternative text which is displayed instead of the image in certain situations. Entering the accurate alternative text is essential for SEO purposes and your page accessibility;
- URL: this is a read-only field, here you can see the direct link to the original uploaded file;
- Tags: tags of the current image, in relation to the album where the image is placed. One image can have different sets of tags if it's put to multiple albums. The tags field is only available when Image editor is opened from an album. Start typing in the field to see suggested existing tags, press Enter to insert the currently selected tag. You can also type "?" to display all available tags in the suggestion popup.
Metadata
This tab shows the image metadata that was imported during image upload. Here you can see file info and statistics, as well as EXIF data of the image. All the attributes on this tab are read-only.

Preview
This tab just shows the full original image.

Settings
The Settings tab contains album-related image settings. This means that all settings on this tab are set for the current image only in the context of the current album. So, when you open Image Editor from "All images" or "Unsorted images" lists, the Settings tab is not available.

There are following settings available:
-
Click action: defines the action which should be performed when a user clicks on a thumbnail.
- Open in lightbox. If "URL Link" (see below) is blank, shows the original image in a lightbox. If "URL Link" contains a link to an image, this image is shown in a lightbox (you can use this feature for serving original images from another server or CDN);
- Redirect to URL. Redirects to the custom URL (see below);
- Open dedicated image page. Redirects to the URL of the dedicated image page. This function is in experimental state now, so it's not intended for using as-is. The image page must be provided with the custom template to render properly.
- No action. Fully disable click action.
- Link URL: Defines the URL used for "Open in lightbox" and "Redirect to URL" options. Here you must enter the full link URL, starting with "http://" or "https://";
-
Open link in: defines the target window for the link (if redirection behavior is set):
- Same window. The link will be opened in the same browser window/tab;
- New window. The link will be opened in the new browser window/tab;
Posting albums & folders
Albums
You can post an album by inserting the Gallery Factory shortcode in a post's or a page's content.
To insert the Gallery Factory shortcode to your post or page content click Insert Gallery Factory Shortcode button:

and select the album to be inserted:

Alternatively, you can copy the shortcode displayed in the Album Editor to the clipboard and paste it to the post or page content, where you want this gallery to be placed.

Publish (if you are creating a new item) or update the post or page (if you are editing an existing item) and Gallery Factory album will be displayed in front-end in the place of the shortcode.
The album's shortcode can be placed not only on the post or page content, but inside the text widget, sidebar etc. This depends on the particular theme, though, and remains the subject of trial-and-error method.
Folders
Along with inserting one individual album to a post or page, Gallery Factory provides the option to publish a folder viewer. Folder viewer is a special Gallery Factory shortcode, that allows a page visitor to view folder's contents and navigate through its subfolders and albums - so you can publish the shortcode on one page, and it will provide your visitors the access to the whole folder.
To insert GF viewer shortcode to a page click Insert Gallery Factory Shortcode button:

and select the album to be inserted:

You can specify the following shortcode parameters:
- header_tag: defines the tag in which the current folder/album caption will be displayed; leave empty to disable caption rendering.
- header_class: defines the class for the current folder/album caption element.
- breadcrumbs: set the value to "1" or "true" to enable breadcrumbs rendering.
For this feature to work properly, first you need to set up slugs, cover images and layouts for each item (folder or album) inside the root folder that you want to be presented on a page.
Please note, that the GF viewer navigation can work only when inserted into a page. It can't work inside a post or a custom post type.
Advanced topics
Adding custom CSS styles
Built-in CSS styles can be overridden by your own ones, to tune front-end presentation of Gallery Factory to your needs. Custom CSS rules can be placed in /gallery-factory/css/custom.css (it doesn't exist by default, so you need to create one once needed). This file, if exists, is included in front-end pages after the default style.css.
Integrating with themes
Gallery factory exposes the global function for displaying albums, which can be called directly from theme PHP scripts.
It can be called the following way: <?php $html = vls_gf_gallery($id, $echo); ?>, where $id is the album ID and $echo (boolean) defines whether to echo the output or to return it from the function.
